Andrea performs at her birthplace

Folk songs from Domahaza

Next weekend Andrea Gerak visits her birthplace Ozd in Hungary where she performs at a gala of the local folk dance association.

"I am very glad to take this invitation, because I have only been to Ozd a very few times: I was a little baby when we moved over to Kazincbarcika. When I was a teenager, I went to Ozd for swimming trainings when we didn't have a swimming pool yet in our city, two times to visit someone and last summer for a Takats Tamas Dirty Blues Band as part of the Borsod Arts Festival. I am especially happy about meeting the the traditional folk dance group of Domahaza, because their dances were amongst the first ones I learned when I was a young folk dancer." - Andrea

Place: Cultural Centre of Ozd "Olvaso" (Ozd, Gyar u. 4.)
Date & time: 25 April, Saturday 19:00
Music: Dobroda Band
Guest performers:
Traditional Folk Dance Group of Domahaza
Vadszilvak Folk Dance Group

Andrea Gerak joined the World March for Peace and Nonviolence which is the largest international movement in the last few decades.

It's time for a takeover: our world should be controlled by well-intentioned forces and groups which strive for constructive goals, which want valuable and joyful activities, happy living for themselves, their families, friends, nations and the whole Mankind. The great majority of people have these ideals. Let it be then the determinant majority!" - Andrea Gerak

Csángó Tükör interview

In the latest issue of CsángóTükör (Csango Mirror) you can read the first part of an interview with Andrea Gerak. The editors couldn't have timed it better than just before the Csango Ball in Budapest (the link is from 2005, but they have it in the same place this year as well) and the Csango Farsang (Carnival) in Eger. At the latter, Andrea will also perform as a guest.

"I set down for a tea with Lidia in the autumn at Gödör, and we had a great talk, first of all about my trip to Moldva last summer which has given me so many experiences that the majority of what I have seen and heard are still in my head and computer, waiting for being processed. I enjoyed this conversation a lot; it gave me an opportunity to think over and evaluate tings deeply, also for myself."
- Andrea

The interview has been published uncut, without editing and this way the reader can enjoy a real, live conversation, on four pages. (In Hungarian.)

Beauty of the World

While having my birthday cake for breakfast :-) and thanking all the nice greetings from people from all over the world, many of them I haven't even met, looking out through my window to the blue sky and sunshine, I'm remembering a poem I wrote a couple of years ago that I would like to share with you now.

Photo: as seen from my window a few days ago.

Thank you so much for being around and for all your support in any forms, I wish you a happy day too and that all your days will go by as in the words below.

Yours, Andrea

BEAUTY OF THE WORLD

Just look around
and you will see
all the beauty of the world:
A little boy's mischievous glance,
bronze flashes in a girl's hair,
silver head of your mother,
eyes -- sky can't be that blue,
a winter day's crystal cold,
moss-grown stone in a wall of centuries,
velvet feet of little babies,
silk dancing shoes,
salad of seven colors,
tempting smile of a peach,
sigh of young trees,
old clock on that tower,
even a fast, red tram,
your favorite restaurant
or newest coffee cup,
ginger-cinnamon cake,
glowing candles,
powerful lightning,
skaters through the town,
songs from a guitar,
photos of a calendar, --

Can you see this?
It comes from you,
all the beauty of the world.

We Heart Music Review

Andrea is recommended by WeHeartMusic.com, a US-based music blog by 30 music lovers, featuring the most different styles of songs and artists.

"What caught my attention right away about Andrea Gerak is that she had covered "Rorogwela", which had been recorded earlier as "Sweet Lullaby" by Deep Forest on their eponymously titled CD, and was a huge hit in the early '90s. But Gerak deserves plenty of recognition in her own right, ..."

Human Rights Gala in Stockholm

On the 10th of December, the Sweden branch of Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI-S) presented an opportunity to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights with international artists.

Besides Master of Ceremony Samson Mande, European Human Rights Hero awardee, several renown human rights activists honored the event. Norsang Drikung, leader of Tibetan Community in Sweden and Dr. Elfatih Shora, member of International Rescue Nubia organization spoke about issues demanding solutions in their countries, while Stig Johnell from Amnesty International took up several situations worldwide, including Sweden.

Honorary guest speaker Mrs. Jacqueline Mukangira, Ambassador of Republic of Rwanda to Sweden and Nordic Countries highlighted the evening, who told stories of how her country has risen from genocide to a safe and prosperous land, setting a good example of finding constructive solutions to various problems.

The audience was entertained by a colorful concert of classical, pop and world music, dance from Africa, Asia, America and Europe. In the artist line-up, different ages, races, music styles and most of the continents were represented.

Latvian viola/piano duo Ineta & Milda Zigure gave the concert a very aesthetic opening. Mrs Sonoko Kase's students from Östermalm Private Music School performed Japanese children songs, piano and ballet pieces. Venezuelan born soprano Gabriela Gonzáles-Toledo, who is also an active lecturer in Latin American music and culture, entertained with beautiful opera and musical songs. Hungarian folk singer Andrea Gerak's choice of Romany National Anthem was perfect for the occasion and really hit home to the audience. Swedish singer-songwriter Mimmi Siegel sweetened the mood while rock singer Lizette& and Nsako Afrodans, a group performing tribal music and dance from Uganda broke the floor with high energy sounds and moves.

The attendees appreciated the international diversity, the very informative speeches, high artistic quality and the relaxed atmosphere of the gala. The event concluded with the participating representatives expressing their intentions to further co-operate in order to make human rights a reality.
